China Has a New Vision for Itself: Global Power
China’s economy has grown at an incredible rate in recent years and the nation is now one of the world’s superpowers. Chinese officials have long declared a desire to become more influential and now, that vision is more a reality than ever. From trade initiatives to military modernization, the country is asserting itself as a true global leader.
Here’s how China is becoming a global powerhouse:
Ramping Up Trade
China’s rise to prominence has largely been driven by its booming export industry and the government has been keen to build upon that success. Beijing has sought to form new partnerships and reactivate ones that have lain dormant for years. Major initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) have mostly been centered on infrastructure, but have also served as an entry point for Chinese businesses to new markets.
Beyond the BRI, China has also been pushing trade arrangements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). This agreement seeks to create a wide-reaching trading bloc across East and Southeast Asia, with China at its center.
Increasing Reach Through Investment
The Chinese government has been using its financial reserves to increase its influence around the world, through investment deals and partnerships that fit under what has become known as ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ in some places. In countries such as Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, attractive lending rates and flexible repayment timelines have led to a number of projects aided by Chinese investors.
Additionally, in places such as Africa, the Chinese government and its affiliates have been looking to invest in natural resources, real estate, and technology-based initiatives. This has led to an increase in Chinese soft power in many countries and gives Chinese firms an almost permanent presence in some regions.
Military Muscle-Flexing
One of the most visible symbols of China’s newly vested international influence has been its growing defense power. From the construction of advanced military bases in Djibouti and the South China Sea, to military drills with Russia and Pakistan, to the implementation of new military technologies such as hypersonic missiles, China is making its presence felt in the security arena.
Furthermore, China is now one of only four countries to possess an aircraft carrier, and they have commissioned the world’s largest and most advanced nuclear-powered submarine. All of these moves have sent a signal to the world that the country is ready to increase its international leadership position.
Advancing Soft Power
Not only has Chinese GDP expanded to a tremendous extent, but its impact in the cultural sphere has also grown exponentially. Chinese filmmakers, actors, and other celebrities have found a formidable presence on the international scene. For example, movies such as ‘The Wandering Earth’ and ‘Wolf Warrior 2’ have enjoyed box-office success in many nations.
Additionally, Chinese technology firms such as Huawei, Tencent, and Alibaba have achieved a global presence, helping the country become a thought and technology leader. Chinese social media platforms such as WeChat and Weibo are now ubiquitous in many countries and are a strong means of communication and collaboration throughout Asia and beyond.
China’s vision of becoming a global power has been gaining strength over the past decade and that trend looks set to continue. The country’s economic, military, and cultural influence have been growing rapidly and this is translating into increased international support and recognition. As the Chinese nation continues to build its influence, the world will be watching with keen attention.
